Tell Mi Weh De Gwan? [Solo show by Desmond Jervis]
Tell Me Weh di Gwan? A solo show by Desmond Jervis, examines traditions of Belizean culture through the diaspora lens. The show title, Belizean Kriol for Tell me what’s up? engages the viewer in colloquial Belizean dialect. The artist’s exploration of historic construction and evolving Caribbean cultural representation is depicted through ceramics as a means to honor an ancient material utilized by the Indigenous Maya of Belize.
The Garifuna Wanaragua (or Jankunu) dancers in terracotta represent a hybrid expression of the two cultures rooted in Belize. The dancers themselves are a satirical representation of slave holders: in this view, the wanaragua figures also represent forms of sustained resistance during and after decolonization.
Desmond's multimedia sculptures also reference the creative Belizean spirit, particularly around Christmas and New Year, in ode to traditions of domestic care and the ingenuity of creating out of need.
Ultimately, Tell Me Weh di Gwan? stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of Belizean people, at home and across the diaspora.
