Join this beginners & kid friendly workshop designed to get multiple generations together to preserve culture.
In this 2-hr workshop, artist Milton “Maja” Jurado will guide students to make sculptures of festive symbolic icons out of bread dough. He will introduce participants to basic masapán techniques for creating and decorating pieces.
This is a bi-lingual Spanish & English class. Both English and Spanish speakers are encouraged to join.
Milton “Maja” Jurado is a queer indigenous artist and cultural bearer from Quito, Ecuador, whose work spans handcrafted furniture, oil painting, and traditional crafts. One of his specialties is masapán art, a traditional Ecuadorian art form that uses bread dough. Maja has refined and mastered masapán over the past 50 years, preserving its cultural significance and sharing his knowledge of this timeless tradition with the community.
